Repeat rows 5, 6, 7, 8, until hat fits around the head approximately 15” to 17” for a youth – approximately 19” or more for an adult. Finish off leaving about an 18” tail to be used in “FINISHING” below.
FINISHING
Fold the hat in half with WRONG SIDE OUT. Matching stitch to stitch, using a yarn needle and the 18” yarn tail, whip stitch last row to first row (do this at least two times for the first stitch and last stitch at top). Continue to whip stitch up the side of the hat to the top forming a tube. When you reach the top of the hat, put extra whip stitches in the last stitch up the side, work a running stitch along the side rows of one edge of the tube (top of hat). Pull yarn taught to secure the yarn. If adding a pom-pom do not cut yarn tail yet.
OPTIONAL POM-POM
Use a large pom-pom maker or cut a piece of cardboard about 4” square. Wrap Yarn around square about 100 to 125 times. Slip yarn off square and firmly tie a 12” piece of yarn around the middle. Leave the tie ends long to attach the pom-pom. Cut loops at each end and trim to a smooth ball.
Turn hat right side out, thread yarn tail of pom-pom into the Yarn Needle and with Pom-Pom attached insert yarn needle through small opening at top of hat. Working inside of the hat on the wrong side, using the long tail ends from whip stitching the hat and the pom-pom yarn tail, tie together both sets of yarn tails together many times. Cut yarn tails very short or weave in all ends.

This looks like it should work up fast! How much yarn does the average adult size hat require?

ReplyDeleteI'm having trouble understanding how to finish the top of the tube to close the hat.
