Help settle the Great Pumpkin Debate

Left pumpkin is new school.   Right pumpkin is old school.

What kind of pumpkin carver person are you?  Which do you prefer?

Leave a comment regarding your choice of old school or new school pumpkin carving technology and I'll pick 3 random comments from those comments submitted.  Contest closes at midnight 10/31/2011. These 3 people will receive a free pattern from my list of patterns for sale.  Their choice.  E-books excluded. Contest void if we don't get at least 3 comments and void where prohibited.

Happy Halloween!

  1. I'm a fan of that cute crooked smile on the left one, so I'm going new school! Though I haven't carved a pumpkin in years... ;-)

  2. Definitely the "new school." It has much more personality~

  3. Woo-Hoo! Looks like you'll have at least three comments!

I really love the expressionism of the new school version on the left.

(beats all to heck the idea of using a shotgun to carve pumpkins I saw on Facebook the other day!)

  4. I like the new school. Of course, that may be because to me Halloween is about fantasy and fun not scary and dead things... Its a debate I have been having with my friends. I prefer the cuter side of the holiday.

  5. I am an old school pumpkin carver!! I like the looks of new school pumpkins but I always do mine old school! Nothing says Halloween better to me than a pumpkin carved with a toothy grin!

  7. I am what you call mid-school, a mixture of both. It makes the pumpkin that more unique and gives it a personality all its own.

  8. I like the Traditional for my home - but I sure do like seeing and oohing and aahing over the new way and all the beautiful carvings and carvers! but good ole' fashioned is my way - and I love it! Silly grins, toothless grins, when they fall out if you cut too much! Thanks for the smiles and the memories this brought out!

  9. Although I like the old school look my honest preference in not to carve at all. Our pumpkins go into the woods (not on their own)for all the critters. I must say, the new school pumpkin is quite a delight.

  10. What's not to like about any JOL but I guess I would lean to something like the one on the left not exactly that one but a bit different

  12. I am new school. I like different. When I do something instead of doing something like normal people would, i have to be different. Like my crocheting, I like to use different colors that no one else would ever think of using. I just think different is better. So I love the new school pumpkin.

The old school pumpkins are endearing, but I love the creativity of the new school carvings.

  15. The "new school" version seems to have a happier face and does not make Halloween so scary. I like the princess and fairy costumes - not the mean zombie type!

  17. I'm a little bit Country (old) and a little bit Rock and Roll (new); however, My Dad was a Rockstar pumpkin carver in the 50's to present and made freehand pumpkin dioramas (sp) to die for (LOL) and he taught me so now I am the ALL school Grannie everyone brings their pumpkins to for carving !

  19. If I had to choose it would be new school. However I don't like carving at all. Too messy and the pumpkin deteriorates too quickly.

  21. I like the new styles. There are many new techniques available. Profess, just like everything else in the world. But in all honesty, we don't do pumpkins anymore. My kids are as they say, to old for my Halloween. Not many kids trick or treat here so I gave up. Gayle

  24. I'm afraid I'm rather "old school" - not much of an imagination when it comes to pumpkin carving. BUT I just helped my daughter-in-law choose a pattern and carve a pumpkin "new school" style. A LOT of work, but it was sooooo cute!!!

I like the old school of pumpkin carving. It's more fun carving the face at random rather than trying for a certain look. And the roasted pumpkin seeds are delish!
    Happy Halloween,

Oops, I miss-spoke in the post I just sent. When you read it you will notice I said "I'm usually old school, but I'm going old school this time". I meant to say "I'm going new school this time."
    Sorry,
