INSTRUCTIONS:

Chain 40 loosely.

Row 1: RS Dc in fourth ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout), turn. INSERT STITCH MARKER TO MARK RIGHT SIDE. (38 dc)

Row 2: WS Dc in next dc and in each dc across, ch 3, turn. (38 dc)

Row 3: RS Dc in next 17 sts, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in last 18 sts, ch 3, turn. (36 dc)

Row 4: WS Dc in next 15 sts, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in last 16 sts, ch 3, turn. (34 dc)

Row 5: RS Dc in next 13 sts, ch 2, skip next 2 sts. 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, crdc (see special instructions), 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in last 14 sts, ch 3, turn. (32 dc, 1 crdc)

Row 6: WS Dc in next 11 sts, ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, 3 crdc, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in last 12 sts, ch 3, turn. (28 dc, 3 crdc)

Rows 11 and 12 and 13: Dc in next 3 sts, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp, 13 crdc, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp, dc in last 4 sts, ch 3, turn. (8 dc, 13 crdc)

Row 14: WS Dc in next 3 sts, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp, 6 crdc, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 6 crdc, ch 2, skip ch-2 sp, dc in last 4 sts, ch 3, turn. (8 dc, 12 crdc)

Row 15: RS Dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 4 crdc, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2, sk 2 sts, 4 crdc, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, dc in last 4 sts, ch 3, turn. (14 dc, 8 crdc)

Row 16: WS Dc in next 5 sts, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2, skip 2 sts, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next st, ch 2, sk 2 sts, 2 dc in ch-2 sp, dc in last 6 sts, ch 3, turn. (26 dc)

Row 17: RS Dc in each st or 2 dc in each ch-2 sp across, ch 3, turn. (38 dc)

Row 18: WS Dc in next st and in each st across. Finish off. (38 dc)

Note: You will be working around the square with hdc’s on the sides and dc’s on the top and bottom. Work dc’s along the top and bottom if your square is about 10 to 10 ½ inches tall. Work hdc’s along the top and bottom if your square is 11 inches.

EDGING

Round 1: With right side facing - Join color B by inserting the hook under the bottom right double crochet of row 1 and work a slip st, (you will be working up the side of the square), ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in same st, 2 hdc in the same space in the side of rows 2 through row 17, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 dc) into the side of row 18, turn square , sk 1 st, (2 dc in next st, sk 1 st) repeat across top of square, sk last st, turn square, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in the side of row 17, 2 hdc in the same space in the side of rows 17 through row 2, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the side of row 1, turn square, sk 1 unused beginning ch loop, (2 dc in next ch loop, sk 1 st) repeat across bottom of square, sk last st and join with a sl st into the top of beginning ch-3. Finish off.

(There should be 18 groups of hdc on each side and 19 groups of 2 dc across top and bottom)
