INSTRUCTIONS for Version 1:

Using color A, ch 4, join with a slip st in 4th ch from hook to form a ring or use the magic ring method.

Round 1: Ch 1, 8 sc in ring; join with slip st in 1st sc, (8 sc)

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, *2 dc in each st around; join with slip st 1 st to the left of beg ch-3. (16 dc)

Round 3: Ch 1, (sc in same st, ch 4, 3 dc in BL of 4th ch from hook, sk 1 st) shell made *(sc in next st, ch 4, 3 dc in BL of 4th ch from hook, sk 1 st) shell made, repeat from * around; join with slip st in beg sc. (8 shells, 24 dc, 8 ch-4, 16 sc)

Round 4: Ch 5, *(sc in BL of top ch of ch-4 of the shell, ch 2, dc in sc between shells, ch 2) repeat from * around; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. (8 dc, 8 sc, 16 ch-2 sps)

Round 5: Ch 1, (sc in same st, ch 4, 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, sk ch-2 sp) shell made *(shell in sc, sk ch-2 sp, shell in dc, sk ch-2 sp), repeat from * around; join with slip st in beg sc. (16 shells, 48 dc, 16 ch-4, 32 sc)

Round 6 through completion: Stop here for a small motif. Continue repeating Round 4 and Round 5 for a doily or an afghan.

INSTRUCTIONS for Version 2:
Using color B, ch 4, join with a slip st in first ch to form a ring or use the magic ring method.

Round 1: Ch 1, 8 sc in ring; join with slip st in 1st sc, (8 sc)

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, *2 dc in each st around; join with slip st 1 st to the left of beg ch-3. (16 dc)

Round 3: Ch 1, (sc in same st, ch 4, 3 dc in sc created before the ch-4, sk 1 st) shell made *(sc in next st, ch 4, 3 dc in sc created before the ch-4, sk 1 st) shell made, repeat from * around; join with slip st in beg sc. (8 shells, 24 dc, 8 ch-4, 16 sc)

Round 4: Ch 5, *(sc in BL of top ch of ch-4 of the shell, ch 2, dc in sc between shells, ch 2) repeat from * around; join with slip st in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. (8 dc, 8 sc, 16 ch-2 sps)

Round 5: Ch 1, (sc in same st, ch 4, 3 dc in sc, sk ch-2 sp) shell made *(shell in sc, sk ch-2 sp, shell in dc, sk ch-2 sp), repeat from * around; join with slip st in beg sc. (16 shells, 48 dc, 16 ch-4, 32 sc)

in round 5, instead of chaining 4 first before i dc 3 times, i chained 3. i believe the extra chain makes it awkward. mine looks just like the picture.
